USANA Wins Three Best of State Medals

Awards season may be over for Hollywood, but it's just getting started for USANA...and it's one of our favorite times of the year! I checked out the Utah Best of State Web site today — USANA won three medals in the broad "Merchandising & Consumer Services" category. How awesome is that?!

Here's what we won:

It's the sixth year that USANA has won a Best of State medal for its science-based nutritional products and the third year in a row we've won for our Sensé skin-care line.The Best of State Awards were created in 2003 to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah.

Best of State candidates are evaluated by a panel of 100 judges based on three criteria: achievement in the field of endeavor; innovation or creativity in approaches, techniques, methods or processes; and contribution to improving the quality of life in Utah.

It's great news, especially considering we're up against a lot of competition in Utah.

USANA Boxer's Title Fight Set for April 4

A little less than a year ago, USANA-sponsored boxer Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradleyentered the ring on the verge of realizing his childhood dream — a shot at the WBC Junior Welterweight World Championship (here's the USANAtoday.com story). He ultimately won that title, upsetting heavily favored and local favorite Junior Witter in Nottingham, England. Now, Bradley is preparing to defend his title against Kendall Holt, the WBO champion, in what is sure to be a hotly contested WBC 140-pound fight. Here are the details for the unification bout:

When: April 4, 2009

Where: Montreal
TV: Showtime

Here's a video showing a bit of Bradley's training regimen. In it he mentions completing a five-day cleanse. Here's a video of Bradley explaining how he got started in boxing. Bradley utilized USANA's RESET weight-management program to safely trim his weight to compete in the 140-pound weight class last year. It definitely paid off.

Beat Freaks Wrap Up Remarkable Season
I just finished watching the Season 3 finale of America's Best Dance Crew and, unfortunately, after the nearly 20 million votes were counted, the Beat Freaks finished second to Quest Crew.It was an entertaining finale, with each of the nine crews that started the season performing in groups of three. I especially enjoyed the Beat Freaks teaming up with Quest Crew for a fun performance with a "begging for votes" theme."We wanted to represent for the females and I think we came here with a message and we won. We won because our message came across," Teresa Espinosa said after the winner was announced. "We love Quest. We love you guys. You deserved to win."The Beat Freaks definitely put on a good show all season long. I still can't get over their magic routine from a few weeks back, or the robot/sunglasses spectacle in the Boys vs. Girls episode. Check out all of the Beat Freaks performances here.So congrats to Quest Crew, but also a big congratulations goes out to USANA Ruby Director Rino Razalan and the Beat Freaks, who became the first all-female crew to reach the ABDC finals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced concerns regarding salmonella contamination of peanut butter and peanut butter products. Be assured that these warnings do not apply to USANA’s Peanut Butter Crunch Nutrition Bar. On facebook.com I'm a members of the USANA ~ Sense Beautiful Science Information Group. This group has been created by Marie Bertrand, a microbiologist and skin scientist who sends us updates on skin and skin care. Today she sent us a message about parabens, sun exposure and their danger to our skin. Below is the message-hope it inlightens you as it did me.

Good evening,

I just came across a VERY interesting article about a type of paraben (methylparaben, or MP) frequently used in cosmetic formulations.

This article, recently published in a highly respected scientific journal, Chemical Research in Toxicology, says that "Light irradiation sometimes produces unexpected activity from chemicals such as MP" producing "2 major photo-products" including one that might "cause skin damage involving carcinogenesis through the combined activation of sunlight irradiation and skin [enzymes]".

It is well known in dermatology that methylparaben (MP) easily penetrates the dead skin cell layer (stratum corneum) to reach the living cells of the epidermis. Since the majority of us are somehow exposed to the sun on a daily basis (and yes, that car ride to work counts, as UVAs go through glass even if it's cloudy outside), this finding could be quite alarming.

Methyl paraben (MP) is often used as a preservative in foods, drugs, and cosmetics because of its high reliability in safety based on the rapid excretion and nonaccumulation following administration. Light irradiation sometimes produces unexpected activity from chemicals such as MP; furthermore, there is ample opportunity for MP to be exposed to sunlight. Here, we investigated whether MP shows DNA damage after sunlight irradiation. Two major photoproducts, p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) and 3-hydroxy methyl paraben (MP-3OH), were detected after sunlight irradiation to an aqueous MP solution. Both photoproducts were inactive in the in vitro DNA damage assay that measures oxidized guanine formed in calf thymus DNA in the presence of divalent copper ion, a known mediator of oxidative DNA damage. Simulated MP metabolism using dermal tissues after light irradiation produced these two photoproducts, which reacted with a microsomal fraction (S9) of the skin. A metabolite from MP-3OH, not PHBA, caused distinct DNA damage in the in vitro assay. This active metabolite was identified as protocatechuic acid, a hydrolyzed MP-3OH product. In addition, NADH, a cellular reductant, enhanced DNA damage by approximately five times. These results suggest that reactive oxygen species generated by the redox cycle via metal ion and catechol autoxidation are participating in oxidative DNA damage. This study reveals that MP might cause skin damage involving carcinogenesis through the combined activation of sunlight irradiation and skin esterases.

Newcomer JB Ahfua (from Taylorsville UT), at the incredable age of 16, is taking the music scene by storm!

With his incredible vocals and energetic youth (did I mention he is only 16), JB not only astounded USANA Associates at the 2008 USANA International Convention, he recently impressed the judges with American Idol and has made it to Hollywood!!

USANA Silver Director Collin Raye Supports the Troops

USANA is actively supporting a wonderful project from Silver Director and country music superstar Collin Raye. Driven by a timely and poignant song called “A Soldier’s Prayer,” Collin is releasing a brand new CD today Tuesday, June 26. The six-song, reduced-priced CD is called “Selected Hits” because it combines four of Collin's biggest hits and two new singles including “A Soldier's Prayer.”

Collin is donating the net proceeds from “A Soldier’s Prayer” to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that does terrific work helping the more than 25,000 men and women of the armed services who have been injured in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Albert Einstein Award, given by Global Capital Associates, salutes leaders whose vision and commitment have contributed to the critical advancement of vital life-saving and life-enhancing technology to benefit mankind. Dr. Wentz received the award in recognition of his contributions to nutritional science, as well as his many humanitarian endeavors.

We are a military family that is currently getting to live in Europe . We have a beautiful teenage daughter and two adorable puppy boys (Euro & Mozes). However, in a couple of years we will be getting out of the military and facing the unknown. Wanting some stability we joined the USANA team and are extremely excited!!

Important factors that brought us to USANA:

Cancer, Diabetes, Stokes, Arthritis, Obesity and many other health problems run in both of our families.
Last year it was discovered that I had cancer cells in the early stages of multiplying, which required me to have a complete hysterectomy.
A few years ago my husband was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is something that not only causes him pain every moment of this life now, but it’s also a disease that has no cure.

USANA was invited to ring the bell in celebration of its 11th year of listing as common stock and in recognition of the company’s unprecedented growth.

Silver Director Werner Berger Climbs Mount Everest

Canadian businessman and USANA Silver Director, 69-year-old Werner Berger, is on the final leg of his quest to become the oldest North American to ever climb Mount Everest.

Having already reached the summit of Mt. McKinley—North America’s highest point—in 2006, as well as previous successful summits of Mt. Aconcagua (South America), Mt. Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mt. Elbrus (Europe), Vinson Massif (Antarctica), and Mt. Kosciuzsko (Australia), Werner is well prepared for this ultimate challenge of tackling Everest.
